우리나라에서 제주도 만큼 지역색이 강한 지방도 없을 것이다. 과연 검은 돌담만을 쌓으면 제주스러운 것일까? There will be no place in Korea that has more eccentric character than Jeju Island. Could a building acquire the unique characteristics of Jeju just because it features black basalt stone walls without any architectural consideration?
건물은 일층에 놓인 제주 상징물과 장남감 블럭 같은 부품들로 구성된다.
The building is composed of parts such as Jeju symbols and toy blocks placed on the first floor.
대지의 특성을 고려해 전후로 전망이 트인 주택이라는 프로그램으로 인하여 중심에 계단실 코어를 두고 양측에 긴 직사각형의 거실을 가진 가구를 하나씩 배치하여 구조적 대칭을 취하였다. 이렇게 얻어진 좌우대칭의 안정적 입면에 가장 '제주'하면 연상되는 것들, 돌하르방, 감귤, 해녀 등을 1층에 기둥처럼 배치함으로써 일상의 상징적 오브제들을 무거운 건축적 요소로 포함하고자 하였다. Regarding the conditions of the site, two units with a long rectangular living room, visually penetrating the sea, are placed on both sides of the staircase in the center to achieve bilateral symmetry. Considering the characteristics of Jeju, a symbolic cliché is included on this stable and symmetrical facade by arranging the most unique objects of Jeju Island such as dol-hareubang(stone grandpa), orange and haenyeo(female divers) as archi-tectonic elements.
창은 바닥에 놓이기도 하고 슬래브에 매달려 있기도 하다.
The windows are either placed on the floor or suspended from the slab.
견고하게 쌓인 판들이 다소 가벼워보이는 제주의 상징물에 의해 지탱되고 있는 모양새가 약간 우스꽝스러워 보일 수도 있지만 이는 제주에서는 엄연히 도처에서 발견되는 의미있는 오브제들인 점은 기존에 건축이 행해오던 현학적이고 관념적인 컨텍스트의 반영에 대한 직설적인 물음이다. It may seem a bit ridiculous that the heavy slabs are supported by the emblems of Jeju which are rather light, but meaningful objects found everywhere in Jeju. It is a straightforward question on the prevailing pedantic and ideological reflection of the contextualization.
바다를 대하는 테라스 입면과 주 진입의 반대면은 대비를 이룬다.
The elevation of the terrace facing the sea and the opposite side of the main entrance are in contrast.
전제적으로 건물은 기하학적 블럭들의 조합들로 이루어진 듯한 모습을 띠면서 좌우대칭 뿐 아니라 상하로도 대칭을 이루어 어느 순간에는 중력을 떠난 장난감과도 같은 느낌을 갖는다. The building looks like a combination of geometric blocks and the symmetry could be applicable to not only horizontal but also vertical orientation. Then the direction of gravity gets disoriented and the building hovers lightly like a toy.
