성북동 동네의 성격을 잘 드러내며 도로변에 늘어선 담장은 사적영역의 보호와 공공의 개방감 사이를 중재하며 나타난 사회적 산물이다. 성북동 담집은 이러한 담장에 대해 애매한 태도를 취함으로써 담 혹은 벽에 대한 건축적 유희와 사회적 물음을 동시에 던진다. The walls along the street in Seongbuk-dong are the social outcome that intervene the privacy and the publicity. The Wall House shows architectural playfulness and casts social questions at the same time by taking an ambiguous attitude on these walls. 

기능을 고려한 다양한 형상의 볼륨들은 도로변 담장에 닿을듯 말듯 하며 살짝 걸치기도 하고, 결국엔 담장 위에 올라앉음으로써 담과 벽의 경계를 모호하게 하는데 반해 정원 쪽 입면은 고전적 질서를 가지며 다소 엄숙함을 자아내는데, 이러한 대비는 르 꼬르뷔제의 초기작, 빌라 슈보브가 정원과 도로변 담장에 보였던 태도를 전복하며 맥을 같이 한다. While touching the wall or slightly being hung on it, various volumes considering the function sit on the wall eventually obscuring the boundary between the fence and the wall. On the contrary, the garden side has a solemn classical order. This contrast is in line with Le Corbusier’s early work ‘Villa Schwob’ but overturns its attitude to the garden and the street.
