남녀의 전통적 역할이 점점 희미해져 가는 현대사회의 흐름에 따라 주택내에서의 프라이버시와 주택 공간의 기본적 성격 또한 변화하고 있다. 과거의 가부장적인 대가족 시대에서 당연스레 간과되어 왔던 가족간의 프라이버시, 특히 부부간의 프라이버시 조차도 이제는 가장 기본적으로 지켜져야 하는 것이 되었으며 이는 여성의 사회활동 참여에 따른 경제적 독립성이 한 몫을 한다. In accordance with the flow of modern society in which the traditional roles of men and women are increasingly blurred, the privacy in the house and the basic characteristics of the housing space are also changing. Privacy between family members, especially between husband and wife, which had been overlooked for granted in the past patriarchal extended family era, has now become the most basic thing to be observed, and economic independence according to women's participation in social activities plays a part.

그에 따라 주방은 먹을 것을 생산하는 전통적 기능이 축소되고 음식의 소비에 적합한 큰 식탁이 놓인 카페와 같은 공간으로 변모하였다. 홍은동 남녀하우스에서의 일층에 위치한 주방 또한 예비신혼부부인 건축주가 퇴근후 들르는 집안의 와인바이다. 거실과 침실은 같은 면적과 형식으로 구성되어 둘간의 프라이버시를 느슨하게 하지만 각각 독립적인 화장실을 가짐으로 인해 다시금 거실은 남성의 공간으로, 침실은 여성의 공간으로 암묵적으로 점유된다. 거실의 청록빛 대리석벽과 침실의 붉은빛 나무벽은 그러한 속성을 상징적으로 나타내는 재료이다. Living room and bedroom on different floors loosen the privacy between them because they have the same area and type, however, with independent toilet on each, the living room is again implicitly occupied by men and the bedroom by women. Blue-green marble wall in the living room and red wooden wall in the bedroom are symbolic materials that represent such properties.
